Ed Gerritsen (Rotterdam 1955). As a child, inspired by realist painters such as Rembrandt, Vermeer and Ruisdael. As soon as he could hold a pencil, he drew. Lessons byJohn Noy and direct style of painting has been a major contributor in its development as a visual artist. After the Academy of Fine Arts in Nunspeet he has followed several masterclasses with ao Paul Nassenstein, Saskia Jetten, Wouter Berns and Gerben Koldijk. The idea is a starting point and for implementing each style may be used. Fueled by influences and feelings he consciously works with different styles but always recognizable as his. When words can't tell the painting does (art communicates without words), he argues. In the quest for a "familiar style" he was reached geometric abstract paintings. The apparently colorless work is strongly derived from architectural forms. They have, though highly abstracted, still affinity. The imagery consists of basic geometric shapes and neutral graphic planes. The work is peaceful, balanced and a factor "coincidence" is not there. The desired architectural structure will evoke in the viewer within a second a recognizable image. That picture (figurative) appears then to be higher than initially thought otherwise. The logic in our current thinking pattern is broken. The thoughtful planning and the use of grayish colors give the paintings a tactile graphic appearance. The essence of space is represented by at first sight simple compositions of clear shapes in acrylic on canvas.
